I can't blame her ONE bit - RULES are RULES and when you BREAK them you SHOULD get a consequence. Not constant "Oh okay we'll wipe the slate clean and start over again, and again, and again or Oh okay I'll back down and let you do what you want because your punishment will ultimately be inconvenient for me."

It would be interesting to follow up with this story in say 3 years and see if the kid ever broke the rule again.

I do beleive the law is much the same way as that mom's rules - what is in the car is the responsibility of the driver of the car...
be it booze, crack, meth, guns...comes back to the person in control of the car.
