I couldn't believe it. The school sent a note home to us a week or so ago that difficult child was receiving an academic award.
It turns out that difficult child has been volunteering his time each Thursday to put out new issues of the school newspaper in various bins around the school and he has been getting rid of old issues.
The principal came over to introduce herself and told us that difficult child always gives her a reason to smile when she sees him and that the office staff just loves him. Later, the teacher-advisor to the newspaper stopped us to tell us how much she loves difficult child and that he is wonderful.
It makes all those meltdowns in his early years worth it. I'm such a proud mama!
