Sharon...I LOVE fast shipping. I actually left wonderful feedback for a ebayer who messed up an order but who shipped fast. She called me completely apologetic about messing up the order and offered to refund the shipping or send me an extra item. I told her that I didnt want her to lose money on the shipping, I knew she was going into the hole that way but that if she wanted to throw in the two dresses she was offering me...that was fine. I didnt hold the mess up over her at all. People make mistakes. She shipped those things so fast it wasnt funny!

Same time I bought those things, I bought and paid for another item. It didnt come for a week and a half after that order. I was ticked. I emailed that person and she snottily replied she had the full 5 to 7 working days to ship an item. Well allrighty then.

Janet,
I think that if you have a very small operation like I have and the the post office is really close, it's no big deal to ship that quickly. Now if you are running a moderately-sized business by yourself, I can see just going to the post office on Tues and Thur for example. It definitely takes time to carefully pack and ship and item. I'm a stickler for good packing! I suppose it also depends what you are mailing - something that can be thrown in an envelope, or something that requires peanuts or bubble paper packed carefully in a box (which is what most of mine are - you should have seen me packing a set of 8 Waterford saucer champagne glasses!!!!!!!).

Love me...Love me not
And then you are also at the mercy of the post office!

I swear I have shipped things internationally that have arrived faster than items that were shipped a few states away!

And folks will email "Where's my item? Where's my item?" All I can do is let them know it was shipped and then .....wait.

A couple of times things have been actually lost in the mail. And then I am stuck having to refund the customer's money - PLUS I am out my items. It's a horrible loss.

So you just gotta do the best you can and hope everything turns out OK! (Story of our lives...I guess :) )

Websites are easy as pie, especially if you have Frontpage. If you were close enough I'd come over and show you how. I've had several.

If you're not doing a full time business website I can recommend weebly. Super easy with no learning curve and its free. difficult child did a site for fun and it only took her a day or so. Here is a link if you want to check them out.

Star,

If you are needing to package things carefully, with bubble wrap and peanuts, for example, you might consider adding a dollar or two as handling fees and explain that the handling fees are to cover those things. For fast shipping and great packaging I am always willing to pay more. Yes, that is ME being willing to PAY MORE - I know, I know, I am the woman who filled stockings one Christmas solely with freebies gotten through the mail. But some things are worth paying for.

I also look for sellers who ship USPS priority mail. The flat rate boxes and envelopes esp are nice because you can know exactly what postage will be and the boxes are FREE. You can even go to www.usps.gov and order the supplies for free. They take a week or two but they show up for free. It is really really handy and the box sizes are pretty flexible. When I have a number of things listed I often say that if you win one auction you can add more to the box for no additional fee as long as it fits in whatever size flat rate box, if it doesn't fit I will move up to the next size box if that is available.

Be very careful with the home pickup for priority mail. The tracking doesn't work unless you take it to the post office, or at least that is how it works here. It has to be scanned in and postal carriers apparently do not do that. Often the tracking info doesn't show up until after the item is delivered, but if an item gets lost they can look for it a lot more effectively when it is shipped priority.

Just some of my thoughts.

I also save boxes and bubble wrap and even those air pocket thingys that amazon uses to pad boxes. I have found that walmart bags can be excellent packing material for very little additional weight. It also gets those extra bags out of your house!

I don't advert that I accept Paypal. I will if it's absolutely necessary and the only way a client can pay for my services (I'm a web dev & graphics specialist). I've heard horror stories and seen the paypalsux website with a whack load of horror stories. Just remember paypal is not a bank so they are not subject to international banking laws, they can go around those protective laws and do what they want. Take care in using them for large amounts. They've been sued more than several times.

I have never had any real problems with them and I opened an account (now closed but hubby and I use the same account - his and are both listed on it) way back when they first started, a merchant one no less. I find their USD to CND and vice versa fee of 20 dollars (conversions) very exorbitant and just way to much, even real banks to charge that much.

I have never had a single problem with anything online...especially with Paypal, Ebay or buying anything.

Now that said, Billy recently got hacked on World of Warcraft of all things! Somehow they got his password for that and evidently he also had a long forgotten Yahoo merchant account which was billed through Paypal. This Yahoo account had the same password as the WOW account.

He had changed a bunch of passwords but forgot he had the yahoo account. They billed a ton of stuff to that account and suddenly he got hit on Paypal for like 500 bucks!

Paypal fixed it free. It took about a week to get it all straightened out but they did it.
