Being in California, earthquakes are relatively common. I don't know much about the LA area, but I used to live right along the Hayward fault (fun fact: Apple had a manufacturing plant built on that fault in the late 80's-early 90's, don't know if it's still in operation) and they've been waiting for the "Big One" for about fifty years. The last major earthquake on that fault was in the 1860's (I think).
