We got Mandy for Bubba when he was quite a bit older. He was unimpressed, to say the least. Then we got Oscar as a small puppy for Mandy when it was clear that Bubba wouldn't be with us much longer. I think you have to take the older dog into consideration. They don't get along so well when there's a big age difference. Mandy and Oscar are inseparable and it makes it so much easier on all of us because once the basic training was done with Oscar, they were (and are) happy to keep each other entertained. I had totally forgotten how much work a puppy is, and having a sweet mannered Mandy around to help has been a godsend. Bubba was a puppy when M was your difficult child's age. M was not nice to him, and as much as I wanted him to be M's dog, Bubba was soon my dog. Not that I regret it, but I see that my expectations of M were not realistic.
