I was watching Ted talks and saw a presentation about a math concept shown through crochet. I thought that if someone had a very hands on kid that liked math and science this might be interesting for them.

I saw something on PBS (Knit and Crochet Today show) about a teacher who got a grant to study knitting in the classroom and the correlation to test scores. She took kids in two classes (same age, etc) taught one class to knit and not the other. Before she started teaching the knitting she gave a pretest and after 12 weeks or so, she gave a post test and the knitters improved quite a bit more than the non knitters. She thought it might have something to do with the hand mind coordination and keeping the brain busy (but not taxed) while teaching the concepts of the classroom.
