Hi,

I'm brand new here. I am reading a lot of your posts about finding a good Neuro psychiatric - how do I find a good one? I guess I'm supposed to consult the pediatrician first for a referral?

We have a 5 year old daughter who is - um, unusual. I have read many of your posts and I could have written them myself - many, many things are sounding familiar..

Thank you for the advice in advance. We would like our daughter to be evaluated.

I think it's always a good idea to check in with your child's pediatrician to see what they know about specialists in the area. I know mine would always ask directly how things went at appointments like this as it helped him assess who in the area was good with kids, etc. Often insurance companies require a pediatrician's referal in order to cover an neuropsychologist appointment and in areas of the country where waiting lists are long the neuropsychologist's themselves may as well.

If it's a neuropsychologist you're after (developmental pediatricians also usually do a good job with the little ones) make sure to check qualifications. Not all psychologists are neuropychologists.
