Our lives were similar and I agree with you. Highland Park looked down on people from Lincolnwood. Although I did not start therapy because of the bullying (by high school I learned how to defend myself), I do think that how meanly I was treated in Lincolnwood was key to my turning away from my parent's religion. It does n Occupational Therapist (OT) seem fair now, as an adult, but I associated Jewish people as people who were mean to me, since Lincolnwood was almost all. As soon as I graduated, I got married to a non-Jew (first one in my family with a ton following my lead) and moved far away from Lincolnwood and never looked back. I do have emotional scars, but more due to my family than that. Although we certainly were too old and wise to be abused in Crystal Lake, the people reminded me of those in LIncolnwood and they weren't Jewish so that was good...I stopped having bigoted thoughts about people of my own ethnicity. I saw anyone could be that way. Also, it motivated hubby and me to take off to a place we'd feel more at home at. So far, so good.
