Two of my three children meet the full criteria for ADHD-predominantly inattentive type. However, that doesn't mean they truly have ADHD. ADHD-like symptoms can be caused by many other disorders, including mood disorder (in my son's case) and anxiety (in my younger daughter's case). I imagine the same holds true for epilespy. In trialing stimulants, as with every other medication, you have to weigh the benefits vs the cost or risks. My son trialed just about every stimulant out there, and while they helped his attention, they had a negative effect on his mood. When he was in day treatment last winter, his attending psychiatrist recommended that he not take stimulants for the foreseeable future. We have not trialed stimulants on my younger daughter M. We're still deciding. They can worsen anxiety, and she already has a boatload of that. But if we do, it will be as your psychiatric is doing it -- with small doses of Ritalin to see how she reacts. My understanding is that stimulants can lower the seizure threshold. Has your neuro or psychiatric addressed that issue with you? Or have they considered adjusting her other medications to see if they can improve her attention (sometimes these medications can cause cognitive dulling as a side effect)? There is no doubt that stimulants work, but sometimes the cost outweighs the benefit. Good luck.
