But my mother is now dying so that apparently changes 40+ years of my mother's behavior toward me. Plus, my aunt feels badly that her sister (my mother) is dying without a strong/healthy relationship with her niece (me) so somehow it's up to me to fix it.

How is that your fault or something that your aunt must fix? That is all on your mom and no one else is to blame. In a perfect world we would all have healthy relationships but this sure as heck isn't a perfect world. I understand your aunt's feelings but it's not up to her. The simple fact that we share genetic material with someone sometimes isn't enough to make it work.

Thank you so much for all the support and guidance I've been given on this... it made a potentially bad weekend a lot better. I emailed my brother and heard back from him just now. He assured me that all is well and he would ask for my help with appointments, etc if needed. I feel a lot more settled now.
