I imagine he himself is still in processing mode. It's tough to even begin to understand the concept of what having a child means with someone you didn't choose to be your partner in raising the family. It's not even conceivable to him yet what impact this really will have on the rest of his life, not to mention the lives of his parents. I'm sure his "I don't knows" and such are mixed with shock, embarrassment, and helplessness at this point.
