Just had to add my two cents. I once went to a phychiatrist when I was very suicidal who told me that because I was wearing make-up I really didn't feel that bad (ever thought of trying to hide it from the world?!!!) and that she had just returned to work after her husband died unexpectedly 5 days earlier so if I thought I had it bad I should put myself in her shoes. She said all of this just after her introduction as she was walking into the room, before she even sat down. Let me tell you, there's nothing like a "professional" who you've gone to out of sheer desperation discrediting your feelings. Then I saw a therapist (not sure of his credentials) who asked me about my religion and spirituality. I told him I was a Christian and he immediately told me that he was a Buhdist and tried adamantly to get me to convert. Did I mention these were both people who worked at the county mental health facility? Go figure. Also, just as an fyi, in this and other forums I have seen people mention Medicaid advise that you would first need to get a referal from your primary care doctor to go to a specialist to have your child evaluated. I don't know if it is the same in all states, but in mine, this is not the case. For any mental health service you do not need approval from your primary care dr. Medicaid is a federal program administered by the individual states, so rules could vary from state to state. I live in a relatively poor state and the Medicaid program is not good, but thank goodness for my kids, mental health is not one area they try to cut corners.
