Tegretol May Increase Risk of Spina Bifida in Pregnancy

As an epileptic I've been aware of this concern for over 25 years. Tegretol is one of those medications that are pulled during the first 2 trimesters of pregnancy. Of late Lamictal is proving to be one of the safer medications during pregnancy.

kt is on tegretol & the most stable she's ever been. If & when she chooses to have a baby I fear for her stability - really do.

Thank you for the information. daughter in law is epileptic (fully controlled, but on Tegretol) but she and difficult child 1 say they do not want to have children. However, if that changes I will quietly do my best to ensure as safe as pregnancy as possible.

I would be interested to know the metabolic pathway that causes the increased risk - is it affecting the rate of folate uptake, for example? Would merely increasing your intake of folic acid reduce the added risk, or is this an entirely independent pathway?

I think I might need to do more research.
