My furry pups are Cowboy, Miss Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. They couldn't be more different personalities if they tried. Cowboy has no "cutsie" factor. He is my constant companion and is always working to make sure his flock is safe from strangers, squirrels and anything that looks to be a threat to me. He is a working dog through and through. Don't even think you are going for a long brisk walk with him. He feels humiliated to have a leash on. He walks his obligatory 100 ft and stops like a statue. No moving 120lbs of stubborn fur. Now, I let him off leash to walk the driveway to pick up mail. He is so proud of himself to be off leash. He patrols the perimeter of the fenced yard and then lays in wait for anyone who dares to cross into his territory. He is my faithful companion but he is terrified of going up and down the steps of the house. I am never worried about being alone in the woods or driving long distances when he is with me. Mr. Darcy was from a shelter in Columbus Ohio. He was sick and ready to be put down but a woman who fosters Labs took him in and got him healthy. She had never heard of Great Pyrs and didn't know what he was. He desperately wants to be an outside dog. He comes in under duress at night and if the heat is too high in the summer. He is happiest digging a hole in the mulch and top soil of the flower garden to lay in and drinking from my water fountain. When he does finally come in at night, he is glued to my side. He is the least "pyr" like of all three. He can be more playful with other dogs. Neither of the other two "play" Miss Elizabeth came 1 month after Darcy. She was a stray in the streets of Richmond Va. She is a small pyr but is over 100lbs mostly because I spoil them. She is such a girl that it's funny. She has the most beautiful coat of all 3 and the most delicate features. Her white eyelashes are so pretty. She wants constant petting. As long as you pet her the longer she will let you. If you ignore her she will go lay down but she suckers in strangers to pet her forever if she can. Being a stray, she is much smarter about surviving. She is the only one who went into the pantry to find food or turn over the garbage can. She knows to drink rain water. The two boys are always so shocked looking. Now that she doesn't worry about where her meals come from I haven't had any problems. None of the pyrs chase balls or chew on toys. I have tried. If it isn't food then they don't do it. They are working dogs and they want to patrol and protect. If they wander into the woods outside of the fenced yard, they patrol and return but Lizzie isn't afraid and will wander a little too far. Lizzie however doesn't like rain or to get her feet wet. LOL. They have brought us great pleasure and we treat them like dog/kids. They are gentle, loving, mellow and I take them almost everywhere with me. I keep the convertible in the garage and drive the mini van with the pyrs. How funny is that? CB is about 7 to 8 yrs old Darcy and Lizzie are about 4yrs old. They don't have a long life expectancy(10 to 12yrs) I recently saw a puppy that I would take in a minute if mom wasn't so ill or my house being on the market. The timing is all wrong. The rest were adopted at about 2yrs of age so I have never had a puppy pyr.
