[QUOTE="susiestar, post: 479913, member: 1233"] We are going to my inlaws, so it will probably be mexican. they get homemade tamales from a local little restaurant where they only sell them to people they REALLY like - most people are just told that they either don't have them or are out, lol. StepMIL will go to Sam's and stock up on frozen mexican things, make a 9 layer bean dip, some other things that are easy, and then just heat stuff up on the day. father in law will then announce what a good job he did of cooking it all, lol (family joke). We will likely take pumpkin crumble. Make your pumpkin pie filling and then put it into a greased 9X13 pan (use the large can of pumpkin that makes 2 pies). Mix a yellow or white cake mix with 1 stick of melted butter or margarine. Crumble the cake mix/butter mixture on top of the pie filling and bake until a knife comes out clean. 350 degrees, about 45-60 min. It is easier than pie crust, less mess to clean up and super YUM. If you want a really decadent taste, use whole milk, half and half or part half and half/part heavy cream instead of that nasty canned milk in the pumpkin recipe. I hate the artificial/metallic taste of the canned milk, and one year we were out of milk and only had a little half and half so I used heavy cream too - OMG it is AMAZING! Serve with whipped cream. To make the whipped cream ahead of time and have it last, add 1/2 tsp cornstarch per cup of cream when you start to whip it. The corstarch will stabilize the cream and it will hold for a LOT longer than you would expect. It is hugely cheaper to do this than to buy the little packets of "whipped cream stabilizer" in the fancy grocery stores. They are cornstarch mostly but you pay about $1 for 1-2 tsp of it!! For sweet potato lovers, get a package of sweet potato fries and bake them in the oven. Serve wtih a cinnamon honey butter (just mix some cinn and honey into softened marg or butter to taste) and they are great!! Or bake sweet potatoes like potatoes and add the marshmallow cream/cinn/honeybutter at the table to taste. If we were staying home it would be a turkey breast baked in the crockpot from frozen - about 8-10 hrs, with the meat side down, and YUM. Our big question is if Wiz is going with us or not. Last year he was going to go down to see his gparents alone because he had to work when we would be down there. He never went and my mother just realized he still hasn't given them the gifts he bought them. She is NOT. HAPPY. as twice he went supposedly to do that but really went out with friends. He is 19 after all, lol. We will spend the night and do some shopping on Fri, if I am up to going. Otherwise I wills tay here and they will do a bit of shopping and I will have 36 hrs of blessed peace and quiet - soemthing to truly be thankful for as I am almost NEVER alone in the house for even an hour.
