Anyone know about slightly elevated blood sugar levels?

My normal blood sugar is LOW. Like 80 normally, or 50 when I'm fasting. I keep snacks at my desk so I don't fall over. Doctor's recommendation.

Glucose tolerance screening yesterday was NOT fasting, and I know my stomach doesn't like a lot of sugar, so I had sausage, egg & cheese on a whole wheat english muffin for breakfast (protein, protein, protein, carb). I figured perhaps I wouldn't vomit.

I didn't... But... My level came back at 141. ME. The OB's cutoff is 130.

So I get to do the 3-hour glucose challenge. Fasting for 12 hours first. Higher sugar amount. 4 blood draws.

I'm kind of upset. But I just read something that made me feel a little better - high levels of stress can up normal blood glucose levels. If that's the case, I'm surprised mine aren't at 500+.

On a slightly better note, my hemoglobin is slightly low - I'm anemic. Hmm, I've been anemic my whole life. I haven't been in a couple of years - since I started taking the prenatal vitamins, LOL! - so they want me to take an iron supplement. I can handle that.

Sweetie, I know they didn't tell you, but ALL glucose tests are fasting. Otherwise it will give false results. Hence, you needing to retake the test.

And I really hate to say it, but some don't tell you because they're just lazy, others don't so you get false results and get to do it again.......more money. ugh

Take your supplement and if you have one, cook in a cast iron skillet. (natural way to get iron believe it or not)

There are some side effects with Iron supplements. Bathroom troubles....not serious, but can be um....difficult.

Sorry about the sugar thing, yeah, I think I had to fast for that one, too. So, they are looking at gestational diabetes, right? Is that temporary? just while prego?

Step, did you tell the doctor you didn't fast for the first test? Even if you did, have her order the fasting lab. It is ridiculous for you to take the icky glucose tolerance test, when you have a false positive due to incorrect testing. How long after you ate did they draw the blood? If it is under two hours, your numbers are perfectly within range.

Are you iron deficient? Slugger is. Whenever he has a growth spurt, his iron levels drop, even when taking iron pills. You're growing a human, so yours should be plummeting!

Good luck. By the way, your breakfast sounds delicious.

Uhhh, actually, I ASKED if it was fasting. They said no, that I needed to have something to eat. The reason I asked was... I already had researched. Had to be between 1 and 2 hours before - no less or more. And me A1C not too horribly long ago had to be fasting.

I would, but the cleanup would get ugly... I have had to reseason my cast iron almost every time I use it b/c the kids do NOT listen and SOAK it then SCRUB it.

Not a problem. I love fiber - oatmeal, whole grains, and so on... The nurse was surprised when they asked if I'd been constipated at all and the answer was "nope!"

As far as I can tell. I do have diabetes in my family - Mom's side - usually sets in around age 75... Thing is, I can't do ANY kind of fake sugar - like Susiestar it gives me migraines, makes me vomit, and projectile diarrhea... Even Splenda. And THAT got WORSE with Bean on board.

Re: Anyone know about slightly elevated blood sugar levels?

Sorry Step, if they told you not fasting, then you got an idiot. Unfortunately, they're becoming extremely common in the medical field.

Honestly to cover my fanny, I consider any blood test fasting, and schedule accordingly, because most staff haven't a clue. Doc office are medical assistants who are barely taught the basics and tend to forget the moment the class is over because they have nothing to reinforce the knowledge. Lab personnel should know better, just from repetition if nothing else, but often they never ask if someone has eaten or how long ago. phht. No skin off their nose if test has to be redone. kwim?

I wouldn't worry, it's high but not horribly so, especially since you had breakfast. Could be wonky lab results for that matter.

Lovely. The person who told me this was not fasting was an actual nurse practitioner.

Re: Anyone know about slightly elevated blood sugar levels?

According to the American Pregnancy Association, fasting is not required for the glucose challenge test. I too had an elevated number on my first test and was subjected to the longer test. After that test I only had 1 elevated number (2 points above cutoff) and was required by my OB to test my blood twice a day for the duration of my pregnancy. My numbers were fine throughout the rest of the pregnancy and I did not develop gestational diabetes.

Hopefully, it is just a fluke and the longer version of the test will reveal that all is well. Better to be safe.
