    Cheese Sandwiches

Jett is going to his SuperBowl party tonight. We've had the discussion about if things get out of hand. There will be parents, so...

But - the invite said to bring his favorite SuperBowl snack. I asked him to think about it. He wanted to take cheese sandwiches.

Cheese sandwiches = 1 slice American cheese between 2 slices bread.

BLECH. YECH. UGH. And not a "snack" per se.

So... I'm mixing up a sort of cheese ball, spreading it on bread & cutting them into little finger sandwiches. Well - HE's doing the spreading. HA!

    Cheese sandwiches. Yech.

    Re: Cheese Sandwiches

Looks like all that work was for nothing.

He's not going. In fact he very well may be grounded. Not even a "thanks for helping me out Mom" - I had him taste it and he told me it was NASTY and he wasn't taking it.

Shredded cheddar, cream cheese, a sprinkle of garlic & onion & parsley to make it pretty. To me, it tasted like the cheese sauce made by Kraft.

Why do I even BOTHER doing nice things? WHY?

    Re: Cheese Sandwiches

DH ripped him a new one... Got home about 2 minutes after my last post about it.

He's going to the party - DH wants him to get out of the house. But... He got a HUGE lecture on being grateful, and saying thank you, and not insulting someone's efforts when they are trying to help. DH also pointed out that, except for complaining to Onyxx that we probably wouldn't let him go to the party, he showed almost no interest in it at all.

...And then... Onyxx looked at him, took one of the small sandwiches, took a bite and informed him that she now had dinner since he was being "a snot". SHE likes them. DH likes them. Jett... Can just eat something else.

    Grrrrr.

    Re: Cheese Sandwiches

Mom, pack the kid his plain ol' cheese sandwiches. They're blech to you, hon, not to him. You asked him and got your answer.

I know, I know, he was ungrateful with your efforts...........but, pack the plain cheese sandwiches or let him pack them and tell him to have a good time. Then remind him you've come up with something yummy for the rest of you to munch on.

You have to remember to step back sometimes. You asked, he answered, and he'll be the one eating them. No skin off your nose. kwim?

Now you can pm me on fb or here and give me that recipe, it does sound good. lol

He's a BOY. You are NOT. His tastes... will NOT be toward finger sandwich stuff.
No boy I know would be caught dead walking in the door with that stuff - at least not until they are "adults" and then some.

Cheese sandwiches aren't exactly snack food... but you might be surprised how many teenaged boys would have devoured them.

    Re: Cheese Sandwiches

LOL HD, IC, no way in HADES was I going back to the store for sliced cheese after THAT!

I don't buy it often, b/c he can go through a 32-slice pack in 2 days. No joke. And then wonder why he can't poop.

    As for the recipe...

1 block Neufchatel cheese (same as cream cheese, less fat)
    1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
    1/2 tsp garlic powder
    1/2 tsp onion powder
    1 tbsp dried parsley
Mix the whole mess together, using the microwave to soften as necessary...

    Re: Cheese Sandwiches

Why wouldnt you just send him a cheese sandwich? I also kept huge packages of cheese in my house when my boys were teens. They sell them in a carton that is about a foot long and the size of a piece of cheese. I would buy those because my boys would cheese sandwiches, bologna and cheese sandwiches, egg and cheese sandwiches, then fried versions off those too. Anything to keep growing boys filled.

    Re: Cheese Sandwiches

I don't want this to be a pile Stepto2 thread, but I have to agree with the previous posters regarding the cheese sandwiches - if he loves plain cheese and white bread, that's what he likes. I imagine it was you who didn't want to be embarrassed having gfg just bring some white bread and yellow cheese. I'm sure, were it my gfg, that adding some other kind of cheese and herbs would ruin the simple taste he likes - my gfg has very simple taste.

Had it been me, I would have told my gfg, "I will pack some plain cheese sandwiches for you and then make something a little fancier for you to share" - compromise.

It doesn't excuse the hurtful words, but it certainly is understandable.

    Re: Cheese Sandwiches

I think that Jett's comments about the sandwiches being nasty were rude. I can see why Step didn't want to send plain cheese sandwiches. I don't know the group of kids, or if Step knows the parents well, but a "too plain" snack can end up with kids getting teased. At least in some of the areas we have lived it does.

What Step made sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing esp if sliced cheese is not normally kept in the house. I have a feeling that Jett had something in mind and anything different wasn't really tried but was just considered yucky w/o trying. that happened a LOT when Wiz was his age. It was more about Wiz having an expectation in his mind and reality not meeting it was the problem.

At least Jett didn't want to take 5 bags of chips to the party! I hope he had fun and that Step and dh and Onyxx enjoyed the afternoon too.
