Summary:Whether your child has been
diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome or troubling symptoms
are just becoming apparent, this book will guide you
in the right direction.AS
manifests itself in an array of characteristics, including
average to high intelligence, obsessive behavior, intense
special interests, and difficulty dealing with everyday
social situations. Children with AS often have trouble
processing and expressing emotions appropriately; they
may be physically awkward or have unique learning styles.
This can lead to isolation, inappropriate educational
placement, misdiagnosis, and high risk for anxiety,
depression, and even suicide. As
a parent of a boy diagnosed with AS in 1994, Barbara Kirby found
scant resources and support. She developed the award-winning OASIS
(Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support) Web site in
l995 to help other parents find the information they need. She
teamed up with Patricia Romanowski Bashe, now co-owner of OASIS
and herself the mother of a son with AS, to write The OASIS Guide
to Asperger Syndrome, the most complete resource for parents and
teachers of children with AS.Romanowski Bashe and Kirby have gathered the most up-to-date information from leading AS authorities, including Dr. Tony Attwood, who wrote the foreword. They know firsthand the joys and frustrations of raising children with AS, and they share their own experiences as well as those of dozens of parents facing the same challenges. You’ll learn what AS looks like and how it is diagnosed; how parents can accept and work with the diagnosis; what interventions, therapies, and medications are available; how to navigate through the school system, including the ins and outs of special ed; how parents can raise their unique child, guiding him or her through the social, emotional, and intellectual challenges on the way to adulthood. The authors’ surveys of thousands of parents of kids with AS spotlight and address concerns you doubtless share. This practical, sympathetic guide will help you face the particular challenges of loving and raising a child with AS.

Book Description
This important book, with the intent of helping others, is an anecdotal overview portraying the life of a person afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning and mild form of autism. The author, who had autistic traits as a child, has successfully overcome numerous obstacles to lead a reasonably normal life. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering, and he has occupied himself with construction projects, carpentry and painting. He is now an author and has written several books, among them three science fiction novels, and a novel about an American in Mexico. He travels extensively and enjoys bicycling and hiking.
Various experiences of his life are presented from childhood to the present, and most of them bear certain qualities and characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome. Other important topics and difficulties related to autism are discussed, such as: childhood idiosyncrasies, obsessions and worries, dwelling on subjects, strong convictions, expecting friendships to continue, collecting things, plus other subjects and ideas. There are several anecdotes that point out some bizarre incidents in his life, along with stories that reveal some of the unique and important projects he has accomplished.
Also discussed are possible causes of autism, whether they be from genetic inheritance, out of balance brain chemistries, or even from heavy metals. Some unique and original solutions including insights are also covered. Overcoming Asperger's is all a process as we explore new ideas and concep

Book DescriptionUsually diagnosed in childhood, Asperger syndrome is a lifelong social disorder that bears many similarities to high-functioning autism. Individuals with the disorder are characterized by a lack of empathy, little ability to form friendships, one-sided conversations, clumsy movements, and intense absorption in special interests. While Asperger syndrome has received increasing attention from researchers, clinicians, educators, and parents in recent years, numerous central questions about the disorder remain unanswered. This groundbreaking volume brings together preeminent scholars and practitioners to offer a definitive statement of what is currently known about Asperger syndrome and to highlight promising leads in research and clinical practice. Diagnostic and conceptual issues are explored in depth, and the disorder's assessment, treatment, and neurobiology are thoroughly reviewed. The book examines the effects of Asperger syndrome on an individual's social, communication, and behavioral development, and identifies the challenges that these individuals face at home, in school and the workplace, and in other settings. The volume concludes with several parent essays that exemplify the trials and tribulations--as well as the joys and the victories--of life with a child with Asperger syndrome.
