COM....I think I have read some of the same articles but maybe some others that say different things. I have heard that forced rehab is just as good as voluntary rehab. I believe family members should be able to force an addict into rehab if they can convince someone - court, attorney, probation officer, mental health specialist, someone - that the person does indeed have an addiction. I also think rehabs should basically be a locked facility for at least a certain number of weeks so the addict cant just walk out when the going gets tough. Somewhat similar was when I had meningitis and they told me I had to go to physical rehab to learn to use my arms and legs again. I was terrified to go and begged everyone in my family to sneak me home. Of course they didnt. I was mad. I needed to go and there wasnt a darned thing I could do about it. They made me go. Why cant we make a person with an addiction go somewhere? They arent anymore able to make rational decisions than I was. Another problem is the complete lack of mental health care in this country. It is a disgrace that the largest mental health inpatient treatment centers in this country is the prison system. Most mentally ill people need treatment not jail. They end up committing crimes because of their mental illnesses.
