Everything I like is expensive or fattening!

Well, not EVERYTHING - but this is how I feel right now!

Got a Weight Watchers email today about Thai Food. I love Thai food. I recently discovered Massaman Curry. I LOVE it. My favorite thing on the menu....and apparently the most fattening thing on the menu.

The article says, “This is one of the richest dishes available, with coconut milk and coconut cream adding saturated fats,"

Well of course. :(

So...We also have a terrific Indian restaurant here. Specifically Indian, Korean and Nepalese. (Yeah, weird combo.) I really, really love Indian food. My favorite thing ever? Vegetable Korma. Followed by Chicken Korma. Seriously, I have stated before witnesses that Korma may be the best tasting thing I have ever put in my mouth. I'd eat it daily if I could. Only the fact that Jabber doesn't like it quite as much as me (and the fact that we're not rich) keeps that from happening, we actually only eat it occasionally. Korma is followed by Chicken Tikki Masala on the menu of food I love.

So I do some Googling. What's the most fattening thing on an Indian menu? Freaking Korma. Followed by Masala.

It ain't fair, I tell ya! It just ain't fair!

Oh, Lil. It's a tough thing to re-program our "food-brains".
Really, it's no different than dealing with a challenging kid... except, it's a part of OUR own being.

Addicted to fat. Or sugar. Or carbs like bread (guilty).
Craving. Working against ourselves.

If your kid wanted help losing weight and kicking cravings, what would you tell them? ;)

I keep telling my brain... no long term gain without short term pain... so NO, no bread, go snack on fruit or veggies. And then I make sure I have lots of fruit and veggies around, so it is EASY to snack on them. And freeze the bread so it is NOT easy.

Don't go to your favorite restaurants. Go someplace else. Or cut out restaurants entirely (I'm saving for new clothes when I get my weight down).

Oh I'm doing all that. It's just tremendously annoying that my two favorite ethnic foods that I actually thought might make the cut - How many fat people live in Thailand or India? - are the WORST things on the menu! It's not like I knew they were fattening (in fact it never even occurred to me), or that I don't like other things - but those are my favorites!

It isn't fair! :tantrumsmiley:It isn't fair!

It's me. Just like I go to the most expensive thing in a store first and then have to settle for something I don't like as much. :sigh:

I love that "card"!!! True saying!!! So can you try to make your Korma and have less fat and less price? Good luck!!

Why is my last message awaiting moderator approval?

Lil, you are so sweet and funny! I swear, you could be a stand up comedienne.

P.S. Now my response to you was marked "Awaiting moderator approval".
A couple of months ago we were getting a lot of spam from about "Black Magic" promoting "vashikaran specialists" in India, so I added all of those words to the spam filter. That is why your posts were filtered into the mod queue. And now my post will be diverted into the mod queue.

There's really great little Thai restaurant a couple of blocks from us. My new year's resolution was to lose weight, so I haven't eaten there in months. :::sigh:::

Thanks for telling me...I won't use the name of the Dark Continent again. LOL

Darn it, I've been wanting Korma for ages too! This place has a buffet and it's sooo good. Jabber and I had a deal that the next time we went out we'd go there! :dissapointed2:

Avoiding things only makes you want them more
I agree.
I spent a few years on a fairly regimented diet (for health, not weight loss), and the diet specifically wanted us to choose one day a month to NOT follow the diet - on that day, we could have literally anything we wanted.

It meant we had a day to look forward to, in satisfying our cravings.
But... we ate so well the rest of the month and felt great, that... after doing the "binge" thing once or twice and feeling awful afterwards, it kind of lost it's allure.

My rule of thumb is this.....If I like it, it will be fattening. If I don't like it, it is probably the very thing I should eat.

I love Indian food. Butter chicken is amazing. I dream about it. Luckily the closest Indian restaurant is way across town and my family does not like Indian food.

I suppose I can do the thing I do at a Chinese buffet. Granted, I eat too much bad food there - but the two things I love that I KNOW are terrible for you - General Tso's Chicken and Peanut Butter Chicken - I literally take ONE small piece of, no more than one-two bites.

Pretty sure the baked cream-cheese crab meat and other greasy goodness makes up for it anyway. :(

Actually, the buffet isn't the way to go for Chinese. They put more oil in the food to keep it from drying out on the steam tables.

So...Jabber and I went to the dietician. The meeting wasn't quite what I expected, but for reasons that weren't all here fault it was a bit disorganized (and there's the fact that Jabber and I can be someone "talky" and get off the subject...or embellish it to the point we waste time. I also think we embarrassed her at one point. LOL). Anyway, we've adjusted my "goals" on "my fitness pal" and we'll see. The main thing for me to cut, besides calories, is saturated fat.

Yeah...that would be why the massaman curry and korma are bad. I looked up korma recipes last night. One serving has darn near my allowance of saturated fat for the day! I didn't know coconut milk has so much saturated fat...I thought that was a meat/dairy thing. Live and learn.

So. We went out for Indian food and I had korma. :roflmao:

I know! I know! But I'm going to start tracking today...so I figured what the heck. :p

Of course, I have some left-overs for lunch...but mostly it's rice and veggies so I think I can manage. Not going to be perfect right off the bat anyway. lol

Now to try out my (modified) korma recipe at home...where I switch out coconut milk, heavy whipping cream and regular yogurt for light coconut milk, fat free half & half and fat free Greek yogurt and knock those 12 grams of saturated fat down to 2.5.

Take that diet!
