Familial high cholestral

My lifestyle is very healthy. I work out and almost never consume saturated fat. I dont eat meat more than a few times i year. My good chollestral is high, which is great. But my bad cholestral is higher than it should be too and I know it runs in the family. I read that familial high cholestral is harder to correct than just regular high cholestral. And lifestyle doesnt affect it...you either take statens and some vitamins or clog your arteries.

So im doing that.

Anyone else familiar with inherited high cholestral?

My nutrition specialist said it's what is in the cholesterol, rather than how high it is, that matters.

My dad had high cholesterol that was not controlled by diet, only medications. All his but one of his siblings were the same.

Fortunately, even though I am overweight, my cholesterol is quite low and always has been. My doctor actually recommends his patients over 50 begin taking statins as a preventative measure. His opinion is back up by what he says is evidence they it an be preventative not just reactive.

Thanks. I did not know about the familial fsvtor back then. My son is one who has it and he is just 39. My cholestral was okay until two years ago and my good cholestral is above average.

My good cholesterol is fairly high and my bad cholesterol is low. This despite my being overweight and diabetic.

My father also had the same cholesterol levels and dropped dead at 47.

Plus, they are finding that statins may do more damage than good. Who knows?

Yeah, I've got that scenario. Very high numbers on the good stuff, but bad stuff numbers are too high, too. I'm at a good weight, I teach fitness classes and and I'm at a good weight and always have been. When I first got the call about my numbers, I went on a strict diet for 6 months, took psyllium tablets, the works. And it made not one bit of difference. So I dunno. I did have the c-reactive protein test that's supposed to show if you have inflammation (as in the blood vessels from cholesterol accumulating) and that showed up negative, too. My doctor said not to bother with statins in my case because she doesn't believe in treating just numbers. My other health indicators are really good (low blood pressure, resting heart rate, etc). So I just stopped worrying about it.

My other numbers ate good too. And oddly if it is familial, nobody has dropped dead of a heart attack, young, old or middle age. I do believe its familial because otherwise my eating habits and lifestyle couldnt be better. I am very health conscious and mainly eat greens, fruits, plain fat free Greek Yogurt, egg whites, almond milk...I am capable of doing heavy work and run around and dont breathe hard...i am going to take the statons. I feel no side effects and soon theyll come out with something better. My good cholestral is also high. My bad is high bit not tremendously so.

Good thread!

My father dropped dead at 61. No autopsy but doctors felt it was massive heart attack. That was before we ever even heard the word "cholesterol". He was a cook in the army. Loved his eggs, bacon, toast with butter and jelly and carnation milk in his coffee every morning. He wasn't really fat but was a big guy. Probably not really more than a tad overweight though. I figure cholesterol is what killed him.

My bad cholesterol is teetering. My good cholesterol is high. I go to the doctor next month for my yearly check up and to get allergy medications renewed. I take Omega 3 daily. I also take a low dose aspirin. I lead a fairly active lifestyle and have tried to keep weight down. So far no medications for anything other than allergies. I'm anxious to see what my numbers are now. I walk 1-2 miles per day 5x per week. That has to be helping something. I think I eat pretty healthy most of the time. I think the fact that my bad cholesterol needs to be watched is due to heredity.

This year I have made it all about getting MYSELF healthy. If the last five years with son didn't kill me then I know they did some damage to something even if it's just my nerves!!
