Everyone in a difficult situation can use encouragement no matter how they got there in the first place. So go ahead and encourage her. Tell her you believe she can get sober and stay that way. We all know she can if it is what she truly wants.
As for not knowing whether or not to believe it deep down in in your heart...I know someone who went through the AA program several times before it finally took. Heused to be so controling and judgemental but is now one of the sweetest most kind persons I know. Believe me you will know when the recovery is for real, the change in the addict is truly profound. -RM
