I can't even get my dogs to bring back a tennis ball!
I had to laugh!!! That's what Molly plays with all day in the back yard! She "herds" it....and even "cares" for the darn ball. Will get her nose really out of joint if you take it away from her, cries and carries on.....fretting until you give it back.
It's what took her from a very over weight dog to one who is the weight she is supposed to be.

Well, that's another good way to put a Border Collie to work, LoL.
My Gryphon is the only German Shepherd I've ever seen who doesn't retrieve on command.
However, he LOVES to play with things like soccer balls and footballs and will chase them all over the place using his nose and his paws.
The problems arise when I have to replace a couple of kid-sized balls a season because I can't get the kids to quit kicking the darned things in my dog's direction
