Is moving closer to work an option? Othewise how about one night a week he stays at a local motel to break up the commuting? That might not be on the table but something that came to mind.
My difficult child husband is quietly ramping up...

Yes, Loth I think that is very therapeutic for him 
ML, it would not be good for us to move at this point. There's not many towns we'd want to live in that we can afford between here and there. And with difficult child 1 just starting high school, it would not bode well for the social issues he's already grappling with.
I think it's just going to be a period of adjustment for him, and reminders that it's NOT forever and something better WILL come along.

You know GCV...having him stay overnight say on Wed. night might make it easier. Break up the week for him and let him recharge. It would be REALLY wonderful if you could make it up there for some of those alone nights...lol. Have sister in law come over and watch the kids overnight...lol.
