Scooter injury results in break to growth plate...

Yes, Beaner was riding a scooter and rolled his ankle. This happened Wednesday but he was running around, but last night I decided that I needed to take him to the ER since it was swollen and very black and blue. ER said it was fine, but this afternoon, radiology called and said he needed to see an ortho. Got him in and the growth plate is not where it should be and MY ortho (also his), said that it feel like it is broken. END result, cast for three weeks, then more xrays and cast if needed.

Sorry that I have not been posting updates about Beaner, but this one is one that I do not care if my family knows!!!!

Ouch!!!! So sorry. Poor kid.
It's typical for the ER to say it's okay and then to get a call back later after a radiologist has taken a closer look at the Xrays.
It's an excellent idea to use an ortho instead of a pediatrician or ER doctor for the cast and healing because you don't want to mess with-growth plates.
Best of luck with-the pain in the next few days, and the healing along the way.
I hope Beaner is handling it well.

I am sorry. We were really scared that Jess ahd done this, but she was lucky and just bruised the inside of the knee - an has 6 to 8 weeks of crutches, brace and limping.

I hope that beaner does NOT use the cast to lash out - it will hurt BOTH of them! My bro did this with a growth plate break as a kid. Idjit. (my bro, not beaner)

Poor Beaner!

Is this his first broken bone? One of the rites of passage, I suppose...

Actually this is his second. He broke his middle finger on his left hand when he was 3. The window would not stay up when it was open and he opened the window and it slammed down on his hand.

Poor kid. Hope he has a cast that can be signed. That always helps. Give him special attention and let us know how things are going when you can.

I swear this boy is going to drive me insane until he can go without a cast!!!! He still thinks that he can run, jump, baseball slide on the floor and not get hurt!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH, and how the H377 are you suppose to get the boy clean and NOT get the cast wet!??!?!?!?!?!? I had a hard time when I did it, so can you imagine how hard it is with a 6y/o??!?!?

Sorry, this is driving me insane!!!

Tie his foot/ankle into a plastic walmart bag and have him prop it up on the side of the tub.

Travis broke his arm in 4 places when he was 6. We did the plastic bag thing for 6 weeks. And prepare yourself for a reeking ankle when it finally does come out of the cast. ewwwww

Good that he's not in pain, bad that he still thinks he can do all the stuff he usually does. Had that problem with Travis too. I guess at 6 they don't quite get the idea of permanent injury.

Poor Beaner. And poor you. (((hugs))) A little kid in a cast is no fun. Big time.

I know that a friend paid a few dollars more than her insurance would cover to get a cast that could get wet. You might want to check into that.

I would be more than happy to, but knowing what I was put through 9 months ago when I broke mine, I already know that our insurance wont cover it and it is alot more money then I have. The cast shoe is not even covered by insurance, so that is $20 that I really did not have, but no crutches is worth it. Hopefully, if he needs another cast, it can be the removable one that he can take a shower/bath then put it on in the morning before school!!

Something that husband was recently told - you need to check for hairline cracks, especially once it's declared to be healed. husband fell when he was a kid, 'sprained' his wrist. Now, years later, he's told that he probably broke it and it has never healed properly, because it was a hairline crack.

Hopefully husband will see this post and add his own more accurate info.

Actually, I saw my chiropractor last night who looked the X-Rays taken for the specialist I am seeing Monday.

My wrist probably WAS broken 40 years ago and I am now experiencing the after effects - pain, arthritic changes, etc. This is unusual but apparently the scaphoid (one the eight wrist bones) can be broken with no severe symptoms; it is frequently misdiagnosed as a sprain. Especially the case forty years ago when X-Rays were not as good as they are now.

While it not likely to be missed in Beaner's case make sure they take aGOOD series when they think he has finally healed.

M had a compound fracture of his growth plate in his arm when he was 14. Luckily we had a very good orthopedic surgeon just down the street at the hospital where we took him. He had to be put out in order to re-set the bone. M was lucky, as his arm did continue to grow normally.

The ortho called and moved both of our appointments up so Beaner will be getting his cast off on Thursday with new xrays and not sure about a new cast. I just needed a follow up.

I will post to update!!
