I still don't get how Skype could be used to scam, any more than a phone call. Can't you set your computer to record the conversation/video? And you would have the guy's face, too. As you said - he's a novice.

I think it's not the "Skype" that's the problem, per se. It's more the potential buyer's request to speak directly - that is a bit unusual. Especially if Terry's website is set up in a straightforward way and selling prices and shipping/payment policies are clearly stated...
I mean, if you were purchasing earrings online and saw a pair you liked - you would just click "Add to Cart" and buy them. If you had a question, you might send an email. If there was a problem, you might contact the customer service number.
Why would you send an email demanding a Skype conversation?
The only reason I can think of for needing to talk personally would be to request those "special arrangements"...
