I think IC and I are using two terms for the same thing. To "Jakebrake" is to use "engine braking". It slowing a manual transmission vehicle by downshifting and coming up on the clutch slowly while gunning the engine.

"Engine braking" is the correct term, and on expressways through residential areas, you will often see signs banning the practice as on big vehicles like semis, the engine noise is ridiculously loud. Engine noise on regular passenger vehicles is also much louder than normal, but not likely to wake you up and leave you having to be steel-wooled off the ceiling.

Jakebraking should be avoided as it places a lot of wear on the clutch and engine and also wastes a lot of fuel.
