For those of you who remember Herbert the hen, we didn't have her long enough to experience a full moulting process. Well, Coco is nearly a year old now and has begun to moult. Her head and upper neck are now bald with teeny little feathers growing back in, she has only two long tail feathers left, and the rest of her looks like she got s ucked through a vacuum and spat out again (there are feathers all over the coop and run). She looks so pathetic, it's actually quite funny. The other girls show now signs yet, but I'm sure it's not far off...

Where are the pics?????? I have never seen a bird moult. For some reason Goldi never totally moulted. At times some of her feathers came out, and she would get scruffy looking, but in about 2 weeks she was back to sleek and pretty.

Give her a treat for me. It isn't easy being featherless!

Change in temps = moulting. She'll be fine as long as she's not plucking. Chickens don't usually do that (sorry, but they're too stupid). They do like a nice bath every few days and a good scratching to remove the casing that comes on each feather.

Coco will be in style for the winter!!

Okay, I'll see if I can snap a picture of her :) Abbey, my birds HATE water. Ever heard of the phrase, "Mad as a wet hen"? Well that's them!

Ohhhh I've never seen it either!! Would love a picture.

Now see, she'll be all done with her moulting and will be able to stick her tongue out at all the others when they start and she's got all pretty new feathers. lol

Okay, I probably used a little poetic license, but here's a picture of Coco:

And for contrast, here's a picture of Minerva (same breed, same age):

And guess what? Here's Coco's shaggy chicken butt:

And here's Minerva's fine feathered butt:

She's just getting ready to do the naked chicken dance...keeping her liver inside, where it belongs.
