Swine flu vaccine and possible link to Guillain-Barre

They seem to be taking the data based on the 1976 vaccine which is similar to the new vaccine - but not identical. This may very well be sensationalized by the media, but I still think it's important to discuss this with your doctor; especially if you already have a compromised immune system.

I had heard this was possible with the new hpv vaccine (Gardasil), but the swine flu version is new to me. I am leery about some of these very new vaccines... Problem for us is that difficult child 1 really cannot afford to get any kind of upper respiratory virus with his asthma -- he invariably gets very sick. But with his Crohn's and the immunosuppressant medications he's on to control it, he's in a tricky spot.

I didn't get a flu shot last year for that very reason; this year I'm in line for all the flu shots plus a shot for pneumonia.

My neuro doctor said that the risk of not having these vaccines far outweighs the risk of possible Guillain-Barre. Some still think that was my original diagnosis when I first got sick in June of 07.

Good to know all the implications of taking this vaccine.
