Lisa, I saw the title of your post & I knew it was one I would need to read completely, not skim as I sometimes do. And I was right. You moved me to tears - but not crying for your loss. Rather because you are so very right, our loved ones are here. The smell of burning sage is very distinctive - and I know without a doubt that it was Fred. As I know he has been there with you, at night, playing with your TV - with Molly & Maggie. Maggie will get to know him, though it may take a while. I remember Stang & I coming down - and you did hold it together, so very well - I still need the recipe for the beef & noodles, by the way. And then, later at the cemetery, that was one of the most moving ceremonies I have ever seen. So much more potent than the canned funeral home type. Native American I may not be, but even I could feel Fred's presence that day. There's a picture of the two of you that I've seen several times - I believe it was taken in a parking lot, it's a tad windy & your arm is up. When we came down for the Halloween party, husband saw it and he said the same thing I am about to - "Those two are really, really in love." And it goes on. Just because he isn't physically here day to day for the world to see - doesn't mean he loves you any less or you him. :hugs: you, my dear, are an awesome woman. (Which of course is WHY he picked you, ya know.)
