The weight gain on medications is horrible. I had lost a hundred pounds back in 04 and then when I lost insurance and the county mental health refused to put me on the lamictal/topamax combo that I had been on for years and they wanted to put me on their normal "we only use lithium and depakote for bipolar along with risperdal and zyprexa" for bipolar treatment plan. Well that is just plain stupid and it doesnt work for everyone and they should understand that someone who comes in with a medication plan that has been working for years and years doesnt need messing with. Anyway, when they took me off my medications and put me on lithium and zyprexa, I gained back all the weight I lost in just a few months no matter what I did. And trust me I complained, I refused to take the medications, I threw all sorts of fits until they finally gave me back my normal medications but by then it was too late. The weight was back and the topamax didnt work the way it did the first time as far as helping curb the appetite. It does help with what it is actually supposed to do with the mania (which it doesnt for a lot of people I know) but it doesnt have the appetite control it used to have. I am wondering about increasing it again but I am already on 600 mgs.
