That 5 minute pick up idea sounds great and one I wish I did when my children were living at home. We did do something kinda/sorta similar....after dinner I often would say let's just take a few minutes to clean up starting with- each person cleaning their own place setting. With reference to cleaning up the kitchen after big meals, my children, even difficult child, had little or no problem cleaning up after themselves personally. Of course, it was a little harder to convince them to do more than that...but in time, difficult child got better. I can't tell you how many non difficult child kids I have met over the years, who do not even offer to clear their dishes from the table. I guess I am old fashioned that way. Ironically, I do something like that now (5 min. clean up). When I'm very tired, I just set the timer for 5 or ten mins. and see what I can get done in that time. A version of this....is I just to myself "Pick up ten items in the bedroom and then go to bed." In the morning, finish up. Either version of this works very well for me...gets me moving...gets messes at least partially cleaned up. My world was so weird...I had a son who was tidy and a daughter (difficult child) who was anything but.
