Made from scratch laundry soap is EASY and CHEAP and you use a TON less than the soap makers say you 'need'. My recipe is one bar of bar soap, grated (whatever bar soap you like is fine. Many think you need fels naptha but you do not. I often use a cheap, lightly rose scented soap sold in the international section of the IGA for thirty five cents a bar and it works just fine), 2 cups borax and 2 cups washing soda. NOT baking soda, washing soda - there is a big difference. Use 2 T for a large load of laundry. I usually add about 1/3 cup of vinegar OR ammonia to the water for super dirty clothes or when our lake is turning. My area gets water from one of the lakes and it 'turns' every six mos or so and then the water tastes nasty. For thsoe who want tips to do a lot of what Lisa is doing, I recommend getting a copy of The Complete Tightwad Gazette. It truly is phenomenal. Ask Lisa about it. Or Star. As for much of what you are seeing in Katie, I hope it is permanent. If not, well, her kids have had a glimpse of normal. As for what you are doing with Katie? It is not the current definition of enabling, which has negative meanings in our society. You are empowering her, and your other kids, and that is a wonderful thing. I do think the clothes you had for the entire family sent a message that Katie esp really needed to hear. That no matter the distance that is needed, you love her. period.
