What is the function of a mid-wife?

When my daughter was born the monitors detected a sudden problem that occurred during labor. Had my beloved OB not been right there and rushed me in to surgery within minutes, my daughter might have been stillborn or brain damaged from lack of oxygen. And years later when she had her own baby, he was born healthy and normal only because her own doctor was right there to do an emergency C-section as soon as a sudden issue was detected.
