Linda, what a wonderful day you have had with your friend! I wish I were a poet to sing to you how much I love my little backyard. It is very small compared to the acreage in Maine but we were happily surprised to find that we own the little bit of woods behind our lawn. There I will put in some shade gardens and water for the birds. We have a patio with a pergola sheltering our table and chairs. One day there will be roses climbing over the structure. We have three large raised beds at the edge of the woods, in these I grow vegetables which whisper to the critters "psstt! come eat us before the gardener gets us!". We sit outside at dusk, waiting for the bunny, the fox and the three deer to walk by. The fox and the deer move on very fast but the rabbit lingers in the grass and when he holds his head between our eyes and the sunset we can see the light through his ears. We have blue birds who bathe in the pink granite bath. A female humming bird flies around even though we are not providing sugar water. What more can a human being hope for, or want, but to be able to experience such peace in an earthly paradise? Gardening is like raising children, we put so much love into what we grow and hope it will do well, but in the end, it will grow the way it wants to, not the way we want it to. He who owns a garden, However small it be, Whose hands have planted in it Flower or Bush or Tree; He who watches patiently The growth from nurtured, Who thrills a newly opened bloom Is very close to God - Katherine Edelman, He Who Owns a Garden
