spoke to difficult child

we just spoke with difficult child and he sounds good. He had some trouble with another kid over there. The other kid made racial comments so then difficult child decided to "pay him back" by doing the same thing and of course difficult child is the one that got into trouble. We keep telling him that he is going to run into people like that all his life and he needs to just ignore them. He has decided to get his ged instead of credits toway graduation. I don't like that but he still says that he is not coming home after this and he just wants to start college.
It makes me feel good just to hear his voice. Hope to go see him soon.

I think you handled this much better than some previous situations- that isn't a criticism but a kuddos to you for finding a good balance between showing you care but backing off from interfering with his own choices and natural consequences resulting from them. At his age, all you can do is offer an opinion or advice but then stand back as they find their own way, in my humble opinion.
