Has anyone been to Mackinac Island, Michigan?

We will be there in mid June. We're going to stay overnight in St. Ignace the night before taking the ferry over. I've been looking at hotels and think I'll choose the St. Ignace Days Inn Suites. Anyone ever stayed there or have a better choice for St. Ignace?

We can only afford to spend one night on the Island because it is so pricey. So, does anyone know of a hotel there that is not super expensive and has A/C and a lake view? Also, what are the best restaurants that are not too pricey?

As you can tell, we don't have much money to spend on this short trip. The main reason we will be up that way is because husband will be airbrushing at a biker rally in Upper Michigan. This is finally my chance to visit the Island. I've been trying to talk husband into it for years and years. I'm excited!

Thanks!
Sue

We have been there, but it's been years ago. We took the kids when they were younger, but we never stayed overnight on the island. It was expensive back then so I can only imagine what it costs now. How many people will you have with you? Maybe check out Bed & Breakfasts, or just go over to the island for the day? Its a great place to visit and used to be pretty "historical". Hope you find some options....have a great time!</span>

My old neighbor went a few years back and they stayed in a Bed & Breakfast and said it was darling and they had a wonderful time. I don't know which one but I imagine they have many.

husband has never wanted to stay at a bed and breakfast, so they may be out of the question.

I am not sure if it will be just husband and me (which I prefer!!!) or if Melissa is tagging along. Depends on if she has a new job by then (she sure as heck better!!) and if she can get off. If she can't get off, she'll only drive up for the weekend. We plan on going over to the island on a Monday morning and leaving Tuesday.

p.s. Knowing Melissa, she will not want to drive up alone, so she will want to bring along a friend. I will not be paying the friend's way if she does come along.

My husband is from Michigan and we go to Mackinac occasionally. In fact, our vacation this summer is a cruise up Lake Michigan and one of the stops is Mackinac Island. It is expensive - you might want to stay off-island and then spend the day riding bikes or walking around.

Judi -- I really want the "experience" of staying overnight on the Island. I know it's expensive; I'm just trying to find something not super expensive, preferably under $250.

Sue,

I camped there 15 or 20 years ago - haven't been back since. Not because I haven't wanted to - just didn't have the opportunity.

Enjoy - it's a great place to visit!

We were there for a wedding several years back-we had a great time-I think you'll really enjoy it-unfortunately we stayed off the island so I'm no help in that regard.

Most of the hotels on the island do not have air or TV's. The Grand Hotel just added air this year. All of the restaurants are pricey, even the burger joints. Be prepared to spend lots of $$$ on the island. While staying on the island is nice and quaint, you would enjoy staying in St. Ignace too. Just ferry over to the Island for the day. And bring warm clothes, the island is always more chilly than the mainland.

St. Ignace is really pretty right on the water. It is a small "up north town" . There is a Indian Casino there.

If you can think of anything else you want to know, just let me know.

If my links above don't work,

The name of the hotel we stayed at on the island was the Island house. Looks like they added TV since we were there.

The name of the hotel in Mackinaw City is the Northpoint Inn. It is right on the water.

Have a great time. Don't forget your camera, it is really pretty up there.

gottaloveem -- Thanks so much for your help!!! I just booked the Island House Hotel. I had been researching and researching online yesterday for prices on all the hotels and reading reviews and looking at their locations. I had narrowed my choices down to the Island House Hotel and the Harbour View Inn. When I called the Harbour View Inn this morning to ask the reservationist a question, she had a "don't bother me" attitude which really turned me off. When I called the Island House Hotel, the reservationist spoke to me with a smile in her voice.

Their website had a 10% off prices discount, so I got the room with a breakfast buffet for $184.50. (tax puts it up to $210--ouch) If Melissa is able to join us, we will have to add on $25. The room does not have a harbour view but that's OK. I could have gotten an even cheaper room, but it was on the fourth floor and the elevator only goes up to the third floor. With my MS, stairs are very tiring for me.

Thanks again!
