It's not just whether there is ice on the wings; ifd the ice has changed the shape of the wings drastically, the aerofoil doesn't behave as it should. The pilot may have been compensating for ice build-up but a sudden change (perhaps even ice breaking off) could suddenly change the shape of the wing cross-section, and such a sudden change, on one side only, can be very hard to adapt to.
It's still conjecture - they were discussing it on Aussie TV last night and this morning. I'm so sorry about te man that died on the ground also, but glad his wife and child survived.
