Here we go again!
difficult child 2 came home today looking dejected. He said he'd tried to turn in a late assignment today after school and his social studies teacher intially refused to take it, stating his 4th quarter policy of no late assignments. When difficult child 2 cited his IEP which allows him extra time and up to 1 week turning in late for FULL credit, he said the teacher mumbled something about the case manager not being able to dictate his classroom rules, and then asked difficult child 2 if he thought it was fair for him to be able to turn his work in late when everyone else has to turn theirs in on time.
Seriously? Does he realize I have PMS today?
So here's my email (I had husband read it before I clicked "SEND" just to be safe) -- I cc'd difficult child 2's case manager, the principal (I'm playing hardball, can you tell?), and husband:

Good afternoon Mr. Social Studies Teacher,
difficult child 2 forgot to turn in assignment #409 Civil War Battle Chart, which, according to [the online gradebook] was due Monday, May 16.
He told me he turned it in today, May 19th after school and that your response to him was that you will not accept any late assignments in the 4th quarter. He said you went on to ask him if he thought it was fair that everyone else has to turn their work in on time yet he does not.
I'd like to remind you that due to difficult child 2's disability and designation as Emotionally Disturbed, he does in fact have an Individualized Education Plan which states on page 5 that difficult child 2 is afforded accomodations for late assignments, specifically "extended time for assignments - up to one week late for full credit." I also note that your signature is on page 12 of this document, indicating that you were a participant at the meeting where these accomodations and the reasons for them were discussed at length. If you recall, I was also in that meeting.
With regard to your comment about fairness, I'd ask if you think it's fair that difficult child 2 has to struggle with the burden of having a mental illness, much less having a teacher who seems insensitive to the challenges he must face as a consequence of that illness. He did not ask for this condition. And this is not about what's fair for everyone, it's about following the law as it applies to people with disabilities and the agreements that have been made between the school district and myself on behalf of my son.
Now if I've got my facts wrong, and none of what transpired is true, then I offer my humble apologies. However, I do hope that I will see a full-credit grade for assignment #409 Civil War Battle Chart posted on [the online gradebook] some time in the near future.
Thanks in advance,
