I posted a little about my hand injury a couple of weeks ago. I accidentally cut my left hand above the wrist with a steak knife on a Sunday. I went to the ER immediately.
It had cut through the ulnar nerve and the tendons for the pinky, ring, and middle fingers.
The ER doctor cleaned it up and called the hand surgeon. She told me he would probably come in to do the surgery that day because of the nerve damage. He didn't. He told her to have me come in to his office the next day.
Monday I called his office to get in. The stupid little receptionist said she could get me in the following week. I told her I was supposed to get in that day. She took down my number and had someone call me back an hour later that told me to go ahead and come in. So I went that day.
Then surgery was not scheduled until the following Thursday. So I was walking around in a cast with- major nerve damage for 5 days before he did surgery.
After surgery the doctor told me the amage was so bad I might not get full use back in my hand. Wonder if that has anything to do with- waiting so long for surgery.
My SO did research on the net and it is recomended that surgery is done asap because of possible permanent nerve damage. He wanted me to find another doctor but I was in so much pain that I just didn't bother. I should have but didn't.
This is honestly the most pain I've ever been in. I feel like I have electricity flowing through my hand almost constantly. It shoots all the way into my shoulder. I'm in occupational therapy as well.
Last week SO, difficult child, and I were supposed to go to Florida for a mini vacation over the long weekend. I called the pharmacy for a refill last wednesday. Called Thursday, still no refill. Friday, no refill. I called the dr's office and inquired about it. The little receptionist said, "Well it may not get done we are leaving at noon for the labor day weekend". I asked if she could please make sure that it got one before they left. It didn't. I called again and left a message for his assistant. No return call. I called again after noon and got the answering service. They said the doctor on call was another doctor in the office. He didn't call. About 4 I called and left another message. They kept paging him, he kept not calling. The answering service called me every hour to see if he returned my call. Finally at 10:30 they paged my doctor instead. He called and I could tell he was asleep. i tried to explain everything but he was very short with me. Said he would call it in and hung up. The refill lasted about 5 days.
Tuesday night I was doing my hand exercises and something in my wrist popped. I was in as much pain as I was after surgery. I went to therapy Wednesday and told my therapist about it. She was afraid I had torn one of the tendons. She looked at it with- another therapist and decided I had ripped some of the scar tissue. She did some heat and ice packs with- a tense unit as well. It felt better for a few hours but then the pain came back.
I went in for therapy again today and she was worried that I'm still in so much pain. She told me to call and leave a messgae for the doctor to have him call and talk to me. She was also concerned because I've had so many problems with- scar tissue and adhesions from my c-section with- difficult child. I've had about 6 surgeries to remove adhesions.
I called today for a refill too The receptionist called me back and said for me to come in on Monday and he won't refill the medications. I asked if he could call in something else for the weekend. I even asked if he could see me tomorrow. He's in surgery all day tomorrow. I asked if she would please have him call me tonight. She said she put a note on his desk. Probably means he won't bother.
I know it's not good to be on narcotics and sleep medications for a month but it's the only thing that works. I haven't slept all night long since this happened even with ambien and hydrocodone. Now he won't refill anything and I can't get in to see him until Monday.
Should I try to find another doctor even though I already had surgery?
I looked him up on the state's website. Turns out he's only been in practice for 2 years.
Help? Suggestions?
